What is RSS?

RSS is an easy way for you to keep updated automatically on websites you like. Instead of you having to go to websites to see if they've written a new article or news item, you can use RSS (which stands for Really Simple Syndication) to get them to tell you every time they have something new.

A program you install on your computer checks for new items of news every so often (for example every time you log on to the internet, or perhaps every hour if you have a permanent connection) and if it finds any, it will tell you, and possibly display a brief synopsis of each item with links you can click to open up the item in your web browser.

Sounds good, how can I get it?

There are a number of programs available, some free, some for a nominal charge. A good one to consider if you use Microsoft Outlook for your emails is NewsGator as this integrates nicely with Outlook, allowing each news item to appear as an email (as in the image above).

For more information on RSS, the BBC have a page which explains it further.
