About the JRC

The JRC was founded in 1992 and has been a successful organisation within the university and within the local and national Jewish communities since that time

§  To provide an effective bridge between the University and the local community

§  To support the teaching of Judaism and the holocaust in schools

§  To promote dialogue within and between religions

The Jewish Resource Centre Collection (JRCC) is located in the Roehampton University library. It is classified as one of the university’s Special Collections. There is a comfortable, well equipped seminar room next to the location of the JRCC which is used as a venue for meetings and most events. Having now raised enough funds to catalogue the collection it will be up and running as an e-catalogue by October 2010.  You can search the collection from any computer with broadband. Members of the wider community are welcome to use this resource for research or individual study. Contact Irene Wise to arrange access to the University library. i.wise@roehampton.ac.uk  020 8392 3761

The JRC contributes annually to the Jewish Resource Centre Collection and the stock of artefacts relating to the Jewish Way of Life.  These artefacts are used by student teachers to facilitate the teaching of Judaism in school. Contributions are always appreciated.

Our popular programme of free workshops, lectures and seminars is in place again for 2010-11. The events enrich the university’s current provision and give opportunities to members of the local communities to attend. The seminars draw on the wider community and the richness of the university’s researchers and tutors. Planned sessions will focus on workshops related to the JRC Collection, sacred texts, Jewish culture and the Arts. The intention is to continue to be distinctive in what we offer and realistic about what can be sustained. Please see the website for further information on events www.roehampton.ac.uk/jrc If you are not already on the mailing list please contact Irene Wise to put you on it.

Holocaust Memorial Day is remembered at the University in a meaningful way. JRC links colleagues running Human Rights and History programmes, the Students’ Union and the chaplaincy.

The JRC’s academic co-ordinator works with the facilitators of the Kingston Synagogues Holocaust Memorial Day Workshops. Irene Wise is a Holocaust educator with the Imperial War Museum and the British Library as well as a senior lecturer at Roehampton University.

The JRC Management Committee also oversees the arrangements for Jewish students at the university and supports the work of the Jewish chaplains. Rabbi Michael Rosenfeld was appointed as an Orthodox Jewish Chaplain for 3 years from 2009. Rabbi Sybil Sheridan will continue in her active chaplaincy role.

The JRC Management Committee comprises representatives from the university, London Board of Jewish Education and local community.
