Cheder

Some of the pupils and staff at the Cheder

The Cheder is held every Sunday during term time and is attended by students aged 3-16 from Kingston, Surbiton and the surrounding areas. The Cheder has been one of the focal points of the community for a long time. Some of the parents were themselves taught at the Cheder, although most moved to Kingston from other communities.
We currently have seven classes and a Parent and Toddler Group which meets at Cheder several times a term. Our GCSE Class, which is taught by Rabbi Mason, is very successful and students gained excellent grades last year.  Throughout the Cheder attention is given to practical aspects of Jewish life and as well as learning the students have time to socialise and have fun. All our teachers are very experienced and we have a Hebrew Reading Facilitator who works with the students on a one-to-one basis. The quality and motivation of the teachers is excellent and this is reflected in the outstanding results in past AJE tests and in our current assessments. Average attendance levels are high. We use a venue which provides high quality dedicated teaching facilities and flexibility to organise larger events such as drama sessions and workshops. We also have a library.

ACTIVITIES

The students participate in many activities, in some cases for the whole Cheder and in others for specific age groups. Past activities include shofar making, visits to the local Jewish old age home and the Jewish Museum, an annual bowling party and chanukia and candle making. On the Sunday closest to Purim the children dress up and take mishlo’ach manot to members of the community and in the week before Pesach we hold a mock Seder.

Once a month we hold a Cheder Breakfast for all age groups.  We also organise popular Cheder Shabbatons in which the Cheder students lead the Shabbat morning service in the main Shul.

The Cheder year ends with a Prize Giving at which every child who has attended the Cheder is rewarded for all their hard work.
